Theodora Iordanidou is an award-winning flutist and Doctor of Musicology who seamlessly combines artistic, research, and teaching activities with a focus on the flute, following extensive studies and professional experience in Greece and abroad. She holds a PhD in Historical Musicology (unanimous distinction), serves as a lecturer and postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Music Studies, School of Fine Arts, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and is Principal Flutist of the Athens Philharmonia Orchestra. She has also collaborated for many years with the Athens State Orchestra and the Greek National Opera.

As a soloist, orchestral musician, and chamber music performer, she has appeared in concerts in Greece and internationally, including Nuremberg, Luxembourg, Schloss Rheinsberg, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Copenhagen, Istanbul, Munich, Salzburg, Beijing, Shanghai, and nine additional Chinese cities during the Athens Philharmonia Orchestra’s major tour of China in 2019–2020. She has performed at the Athens & Epidaurus Festival, Ravenna Festival, and in prominent venues such as the Herodion, Pala de Andre, Gasteig, Meistersingerhalle, Athens Concert Hall, Thessaloniki Concert Hall, Solitär Mozarteum, Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, and Onassis Cultural Center, collaborating with world-renowned conductors including Riccardo Muti and Christoph Eschenbach.

She has performed as a soloist with the State Orchestras of Athens and Thessaloniki, the Bad Reichenhaller Philharmoniker, Ensemble Resonanz, the Athens Philharmonia, and youth orchestras including Camerata Junior, Pro Musica, and ASON, covering repertoire from the Baroque to the 21st century (Vivaldi, J.S. Bach, C.P.E. Bach, Mozart, Reinecke, Ibert, Jolivet, Zdralek, and others). Collaborations include conductors M. Nawri, J.-G. Rumstadt, L. Karytinos, M. Logiadis, V. Symeonidis, and others. In 2018, she recorded live solo flute repertoire (Telemann, Andersen, Karg-Elert, Debussy, Berio, Ferneyhough, Kanás) for the Greek National Radio Third Programme under Dionysis Mallouchos. She has also recorded music for Greek National Theatre productions, works by contemporary Greek composers for solo flute, and chamber music.

Since 2016, as Principal Flutist of the Athens Philharmonia Orchestra, she has participated in numerous recordings of works by Greek composers, including N. Skalkotas, M. Kalomiris, G.A. Papaioannou, P. Petridis, and recently Ch. Kanás’s Relief(s) for solo flute and chamber orchestra, conducted by V. Fidezis.

As an orchestral musician, Theodora has collaborated with nearly all Greek symphonic orchestras (Athens State Orchestra, Thessaloniki State Orchestra, Greek National Opera Orchestra, ERT Radio Orchestra) and with the Nuremberg State Opera. In 2013–2014, she was a member of the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra, and as a student, she participated in the Thessaloniki Youth Orchestra under Karolos Trikolidis.

She graduated with distinction from the Edessa Municipal Conservatory (2007) and the Conservatoire de Musique, Ville de Luxembourg (2010), and continued her studies at the Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg, earning a Diploma in artistic studies with specialization in flute (2013) and a Master of Music (solo performance) in 2015 with the grade “sehr gut,” officially recognized by the Hellenic National Academic Recognition & Information Center (DOATAP). Her teachers included Prof. A.-C. Heinzmann, Prof. H. Wiese, D. Koch, V. Becker, Dr. C. Jans, P. Kelekis, G. Gouranis, with additional training through masterclasses in flute, chamber music, early, and contemporary music with K.-H. Schütz, D. Formisano, M. Ziegler, P.-L. Graf, A. Lieberknecht, B. Kujiken, P. Thalheimer, R. Brown, C. Levine, G. Chatzinikos, L. Ruoho, D. Oberlinger, I. Matuz, among others.

Alongside her performance career, she holds a BA and an Integrated Master in Musicology/Music Education from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Under Prof. Giorgos Sakallieros, she completed her doctoral dissertation, The Flute in the Musical Life and Education of the Major Urban Musical Centers of Greece (1840–1940): Institutions, Performers, and Instrumental Characteristics, earning unanimous distinction in March 2023.

Since her student years, she has won multiple prizes in national and international competitions, including first prizes at “Flutemeetings 2005,” 1st Urs Rütimann 2013, UNESCO Group 2016, and second prizes at the Thessaloniki Youth Orchestra National Flute Competition 2016 and the Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg Competition 2013. Her studies were supported by scholarships from Luxembourg City, DAAD, the Alexandra Trianti Bequest of the “Friends of Music” Association, and the Onassis Foundation.

With a scholarship from the State Scholarships Foundation of Greece (IKY), she conducted extensive archival and field research for her doctoral dissertation. In November 2024, she was unanimously awarded the 1st “Apostolos Kostios Prize” by the Hellenic Musicological Society for the best doctoral dissertation of 2022–2023 on Greek art music and musical life. The prize supports publication of her dissertation in the Greek Musicological Editions series (Papagrigoriou-Nakas Publishing).

Theodora is a member of the Hellenic Musicological Society and regularly presents her research at national and international conferences. Her articles have appeared in conference proceedings and the international musicology journal Series Musicologica Balcanica. She is also a member of two editorial teams preparing volumes for publication in 2026.
